Review Product I Review Hand Phone I Nokia Lumia 520 Review

                                           Nokia Lumia 520

Until October last year I was just using a cheap phone I bought from Argos for less than £50 and to be honest it was giving me no problems, but I decided that with a new job I should really upgrade for the convenience of having more useful features and simply to have a better phone!

I already used Three for my mobile broadband at the time (which I have since cancelled, through no fault of their own I hasten to add) so immediately went onto the Three website to see what contract phones they had on offer. I have always had a hatred for Apple products to the iPhones were out of the question and the other brand I would have considered, HTC, were too expensive for my needs (bearing in mind that although I use my phone a lot I am by no means a "geek" and only use the basic features - internet/texting/emailing/calling).

As it transpired the only phones that were in my price range and had sufficient grandiose (I'm a bit of a snob, I admit!) were the Blackberry Curve 9320 (shudder), the Samsung Galaxy and the Nokia Lumia 520. Both the Galaxy and the Lumia seemed to be good phones with good reputations, but only one was a Windows Phone and being a lifelong Windows fan, it had to be WP. Therefore, I went for the Lumia 520.

Fast-forwarding to the day I got the phone, upon taking it out of the box and setting it up (long gone are the days when mobile phones came in massive boxes, I couldn't believe it when I saw the size of the package the courier handed me!) my fears of wasted money were immediately alleviated. The feel of the phone is perfect, not too heavy it weighs down on your arm but not so light it feels fragile, plus the slightly curved rear panel makes it comfortable to hold.

The large touch screen is very sensitive which is something I very much like as with my previous cheap phone you had to practically run a chisel over the screen to get any response!! It also boasts the facility whereby you can use the touch screen whilst wearing gloves which, after trying one cold winters day, I can confirm is not a gimmick and is indeed true much to my surprise.

The only issue I have with the phone is the battery life. I was used to being able to go 2 days on one charge, but with the Lumia 520 I am lucky to get through one full day without it dying, or displaying the "Battery Critically Low" warning at the very least.

I suppose I could lower the brightness of the screen and hasten the screen time-out to lengthen the battery life, however I cannot stand phones with dim screens or ones which time-out every 30 seconds.

Regardless, it is an inconvenience however I have grown accustomed to and now carry the USB cable with me to work most days so I can top the battery up by plugging it into my computer, thus alleviating the problem.

Until just last week I had managed to refrain from dropping the phone and had kept it in mint condition, but then one day I went to get my wallet out of my pocket and along came with it the Lumia (which I always put in the same pocket as my wallet) which clattered to the pavement screen-side down. I could not believe it however when I picked it up to find the entire phone unscathed! It had fallen onto a rough concrete pavement and had no damage. Upon putting the battery back in and clipping the back-plate on it powered up as normal with no operational faults either.

Having known people with iPhones and Samsung Galaxies which had their screens actually crack when dropped, I am still in amazement to this day I didn't even get a SCRATCH from it falling on the ground.

Here is where I would go on about all the features the phone has but sadly I shall have to leave that to the other reviewers as I simply do not use my Lumia for any of that.

All I do is text, email, call and browse the internet - all of which require no explanation I'm sure.

I would definitely recommend the Nokia Lumia 520 to anybody who needs a phone for day-to-day use which won't cost a lot to buy and is very durable.

Advantages:
Comfortable to hold, easy to use, durable, has WP operating system

Disadvantages:
None that have arose in my ownership so far
