From an initial standpoint, the Lumia 900
is a beautiful, sleek and a relatively slender mobile device. Its 4.3"
AMOLED screen has an amazing black level that competes with Samsung's
AMOLED screens quite punctually. Its camera and Carl Zeiss lens are the
same as in its lighter model Lumia 800 and European brethren Nokia N9.
The photos it produces are quite astonishing from sensor clarity to
dynamic range. To top it all off, the phone is encapsulated in a
Uni-body polycarbonate candybar silhouette. It is more of an Apple
approach to achieving a stylish yet functional device. The animations
seem very drawn out, however they are very fluid. I like the way the GUI
handles in a very minimalist way, because it complements the very
simple curved slab design of the phone. Im pleased with the overall
performance, considering the hardware platform being so strict. The
battery life is excellent and lasting me a little over 4 hours of
continuous use. The secondary standpoint is that the phone runs on the
latest Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango), which is both a curse and a
complement. In my opinion the problem with current Windows phones is
that they are currently required to run on a specific hardware standard
meaning most phones have near identical hardware. Which is fine in the
sense that software/firmware updates for all devices running on the
platform are concurrent. The problem is that technology from a general
perspective is ever advancing in the hardware stage which is
proportional to the software side. Yeah the Lumia 900 keeps up with
other phones today, but the longevity of its support might decrease over
the years as new hardware standard approaches on the horizon to compete
with Android and Apple devices. However Microsoft has confirmed support
for phones running WP7/7.5 with an update to Windows Phone 8. Despite
my general opposition to the hardware standards that come with an
Windows phone, the Lumia and WP7.5 handle really well.
